San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Second baseman Marco Scutaro and reliever Jeremy Affeldt were each placed on the 15-day disabled list as the San Francisco Giants set their Opening Day roster on Saturday.
Both moves were expected. Scutaro has been sidelined nearly the entire spring by back problems, while Affeldt sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee last week and would not have been available for the Giants' first few games.
Affeldt's DL stint was backdated to Mar. 23 and Scutaro's two days earlier, making both players eligible to return for the Giants' home opener on Apr. 8 if healthy.
Joaquin Arias is expected to receive the bulk of the work at second base during Scutaro's absence, while the Giants purchased the contract of infielder Brandon Hicks from Triple-A Fresno to fill the available bench spot.
San Francisco also selected the contract of reliever Juan Gutierrez from Fresno and designated outfielder Roger Kieschnick for assignment. Outfielder Tyler Colvin, who failed to make the club as a non-roster invite, was assigned to Fresno.
Kieschnick appeared in 38 games with San Francisco as a rookie last season, but hit just .202 with five RBI in 95 at-bats.
