St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - St. Louis Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon has agreed to a multi-year contract extension.

Shannon, who played for the Cardinals from 1962-70, will join fellow broadcaster John Rooney for the majority of Cardinals games on KMOX and the Cardinals Radio Network, with the exception of approximately 50 road games in 2014.

"Mike's voice has become the soundtrack to St. Louis baseball," said Cardinals president Bill DeWitt III in a statement Monday. "We look forward to having him back in the booth this season and for years to come."

In 2014, Shannon will begin his 56th year as part of the Cardinals' family and will start his 42nd season in the broadcast booth. The St. Louis native was a member of the 1964 and 1967 World Series championship teams as a player and first joined the broadcast team in 1972.
