Canada survives Czech surge, Russia routs U.S.

Minsk, Belarus ( - Canada held off a furious third-period charge from the Czech Republic in a 4-3 win Monday at the 2014 World Hockey Championship.

Nathan MacKinnon and Morgan Rielly scored 17 seconds apart during a five- minute power play to give the Canadians a 4-1 lead in the second period.

The hard-charging Czechs answered with goals from Jiri Novotny and Tomas Hertl in a 49-second span to whittle the deficit to one with seven minutes remaining in the third, and continued to push for the equalizer.

However, their comeback bid was thwarted by two late penalties as Canada hung on for its second straight win in the preliminary round after a surprising shootout loss to France in the opener.

The Czech Republic has one win thus far in Group A play.

Meanwhile, the high-powered Russians blasted the United States 6-1 to stay perfect in Group B play.

Alex Ovechkin scored on a first-period penalty shot and set up Viktor Tikhonov twice during a four-goal barrage in the second period.

Russia has scored 15 goals in its first three games.

For the Americans, the loss was their first at this tournament after wins over Belarus and Switzerland.

Earlier Monday, Belarus and France each orchestrated third-period comebacks.

The host Belarusians posted their second straight win, clipping Switzerland 4-3 on Mikhail Grabovski's goal with 2:06 remaining in the third period.

Sergei Kostitsyn had two goals for Belarus, including the game-tying tally midway through the third.

Switzerland remains winless through three games in Group B play.

Antoine Roussel scored twice during France's four-goal third period in a 5-3 victory over Slovakia.

France picked up its second win in Group A play, while Slovakia has yet to find the win column in three games.
