Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Benches cleared and punches were thrown in Sunday's game between the Brewers and Pirates at PNC Park after Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez tripled off Gerrit Cole in the third inning.

Gomez flipped his bat on a long drive to center field that hit off the wall, falling short of a home run.

After Gomez slid into third, Cole appeared to say something as he walked back to the mound after backing up the base.

Gomez took off his helmet and moved in Cole's direction as the benches cleared and a scuffle ensued. Gomez had to be restrained by umpires and players and appeared to throw at least one punch before he was ejected. Other players threw punches as well.

Pittsburgh's Travis Snider also was ejected and Pirates catcher Russell Martin had to be escorted back to the dugout by a teammate as he jawed with Gomez. Neither player was in the Pirates starting lineup.

Gomez was replaced by Elian Herrera in center.
