Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Angels starting pitcher Garrett Richards departed Wednesday's 8-3 victory against the Red Sox in the bottom of the second inning.
Richards was running to cover first base on a ground ball hit by Boston's Brock Holt when his knee buckled underneath him and he fell to the dirt. He was motionless on the field for several minutes, attended by team medical staff, then was taken away on a stretcher.
He departed trailing 2-0. Cory Rasmus took the mound to continue the inning, and ended up recording the victory.
Later reports stated Richards suffered a left knee patellar injury, while Angels manager Mike Scioscia only called it "significant" without elaborating.
