UHV Softball Sweeps Doubleheader

Alex Holland and Alicia Fikac each tossed complete games Wednesday as the University of Houston-Victoria swept a doubleheader from the Oklahoma Baptist Bisons.

Holland took a no-hitter into the fourth and backed with timely hitting in a 5-4 win in Game 1. Fikac meanwhile spread eight hits over seven innings a got a three-run third in a 3-2 win in Game 2.

The Jaguars struck first in the opener scoring twice in the fifth with two outs. Ashley Shannon got the ball rolling with a two-out single. With Naomi Trevino pinch running, Brittany Arredondo walked and Marley Moehrig drove both runners home with a double to right-center.

UHV would add three more in the sixth as Holland opened the inning with a triple to right-center. After an infield single by Casey Sax, Ashley Winegeart drove Holland home with a single as Sax moved to third. Krissa Powell scored Sax on a squeeze bunt and Kristina Droz doubled to score Winegeart for a 5-0 lead.

The Jaguars would need all five runs as the Bisons would finally get to Holland for four runs in the top of the seventh before Holland quashed the rally get the final out on a pop out to short.

Holland allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks, while striking out two in picking up the win.

The Bisons struck first in Games 2 with a solo run in the second off Fikac.

But UHV would give her all the runs she would need with a two-out rally in the third.

Shannon doubled and Arrednodo followed with an inside-the-park home run to deep left-center for a 2-1 lead. Moehrig would then reach on an error, steal second and scored on a single by Holland.

OBU would pick up another run in the fourth, but that would be all they would muster.

Fikac allowed two runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out two in improving to 3-0.

The Jaguars will be back in action Friday when they host Oklahoma City in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at the Victoria Youth Sports Complex.
