UHV softball won twice Tuesday at the NAIA National Regional tournament in Lubbock. After beating Northwood, the Jaguars avoided elimination by coming from behind to beat Friends, 9-7. The Jaguars rallied from three runs down to score four in the sixth, highlighted by Alex Holland's three-run homer. Ashley Shannon hit a solo shot in the ninth, and Holland got the win by pitching 6.2 innings of relief. Friends is eliminated and now the Jaguars go to the championship round, where they face the host team, Lubbock Christian, Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. UHV has to win twice to win the Regional.
The Jaguars took on the regional host team, Lubbock Christian, in the championship round Wednesday. Top second, LCU up 1-0 and trying to add on but Diana De La Paz is gunned down by Kristina Droz to end the threat. Home second, Alex Holland pokes this one through the right side to score Jena West, and we are tied at one a-piece bottom of the 4th now and its Holland again and she gives this one a ride. Two-run homer for Holland, solo shot by Ashley Shannon, and the jaguars stay alive, 5-1.
Dawn Villegas went the distance to get the win. That would force a winner take all championship game. Marley Moehrig hi a two-run blast in the first for the early UHV lead. However, Stephanie Rendon hit a grand slam off Dawn Villegas.as part of a six-run third. UHV softball's fifth season ends with a 32-22 record.
