The University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars softball team opened pool play in the 2013 Gulf Coast Invitational with a pair of losses Friday.

The Jaguars fell to Cumberland University 10-3 in the first game and then to Belhaven University 5-0 in Game 2. The Jaguars will return to pool play action on Saturday when they face Lindsey Wilson at 3 p.m. and Columbia at 5 p.m.

The Jaguars jumped out on Cumberland quickly in the first with a pair of runs off a two-run double by Marley Moehrig.

But the Bulldogs fired right back taking advantage of four walks to score four runs in the first for a 4-2 lead that they never relinquished.

The Bulldogs (12-4) would add five more in the third and an insurance run in the sixth to preserve the win.

The Jaguars left the bases loaded three times and managed just one more run behind and RBI single from Jena West in the fifth.

Ashley Shannon paced the UHV offense going 4-for-4 with a double, while Moehrig reach all four times going 2-for-2 with two walks.

UHV and Belhaven were scoreless until the fifth when the Blazers plated two unearned runs. They would tack on three more in the seventh on a three-run homer by Denee Crawford.

The Jaguars were limited to four hits in the game, including a seventh inning pinch-hit double by Dawn Villegas.
