Stephen Shorkey hit his first home run of the season and combined with Chad Kruse to drive in seven runs Wednesday in guiding the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars to a doubleheader sweep over the Huston-Tillotson Rams at Riverside Stadium.
Shorkey and Kruse combined to go 5-for-7 with four RBI in a 7-3 victory in the opening game and then put up almost identical numbers going 5-for-7 with three RBI in a 5-1 win in Game 2.
The Jaguars fell behind 2-0 in the first inning of the opener but tied it in the third on a two-run double by Kruse. The Rams regained the lead with a solo run in the top of the fifth, but the Jaguars answered with a three spot to take the lead for good.
Corti Wilson walked to open the bottom of the fifth and Shorkey followed with a triple to right to score Wilson. After Andrew Thibodeaux walked, Dylan Blaha drove Shorkey home with a ground out and Thibodeaux raced home on Kruse's second straight double.
The Jaguars would added two insurance runs in the sixth as Wilson would score on a wild pitch and Shorkey would race home on Blaha's single to left.
The Jaguars led the entire way in the nightcap taking a 1-0 lead in the third on an unearned run as Blaha scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a Rams' fielding error.
Run-scoring singles from Shorkey and Kruse put the Jaguars up 3-0 in the fourth and Wilson drove in an unearned run in the fifth.
Shorkey opened the sixth with his first homer of the season, a solo shot to right.
The Rams broke up the shutout in the seventh on a pair of walks and an RBI single.
The Jaguars (15-20) return to action with a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday against LSU-Alexandria. Saturday doubleheader starts at 4 p.m., while action begins Sunday at noon. LSU-A will be one of the teams in Victoria for the Association of Independent Institutions Conference baseball tournament on May 1-3.
