Eric Weiss and Jonat Gonzales hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning Thursday to help lead the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders to an 8-6 win over the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars at Riverside Stadium.
The loss drops the Jaguars to 9-17 on the season, while the Islanders improve to 12-9. It was also the sixth straight win for the Islanders against the Jaguars as they improved to 6-0 in the series dating back to 2009.
The Islanders grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third but the Jaguars were able to answer with a run in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Steiner started the inning off with a triple and trotted home on Josh Ledesma's RBI single to right.
The Islanders pounded the ball in the third as Weiss connected on a one-out, two-run home run and Gonzales followed with a solo shot for a 6-1 lead.
Again the Jaguars answered back sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four times to cut the lead to 6-5, but that would be as close as they would get.
Ryan Suescun, who was 3-for-4, got the rally going with a two-out single to left. Chad Kruse then single to right and Steiner walked to load the bases, before a wild pitch plated Suescun. Ledesma then ripped a two-run single to left that scored Kruse and Steiner. Joshua Boothe and Matthew Herrera followed with singles to allow Ledesma to score, before the Islanders got out of the jam when Robert Gleinser lined to left.
The Islanders would tack on solo runs in the fourth and sixth before the Jaguars finished the scoring in the sixth on an RBI single by Kruse.
Islanders closer Jacob Dorris came on in the ninth to strikeout all three batters he faced to record his fourth save.
The Jaguars return to action on Wednesday when they face Huston-Tillotson in a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Austin.
