Verge of Homelessness
We're bringing you an in-depth story on a topic often overlooked in Victoria: homelessness. The face of Victoria’s homeless population is changing. The recent count of the homeless population in Victoria uncovered a disturbing trend:
the people now considered homeless aren't walking the streets, but those who are barely making rent or have already received an eviction, or on the verge of becoming homeless.
The cost to put a roof over your head is getting more expensive. Organizations like Mid-Coast are able to help those struggling to find affordable housing. However, the amount they are able to contribute isn't on par with the rising housing prices. Ginny Stafford with Mid-Coast Family Services said minimum wage just won't pay the rent, groceries, utilities and other costs associated with running a household. So, for those struggling there's little left at the end of the month for the non-essentials. Stafford said more people in the Crossroads are also choosing to double-up with family or friends or take on a second job to make ends meet.
