Port Lavaca Economy
How do you make a small town economy grow? First you need some good advice and Thursday, Calhoun County got some words of wisdom from the Texas Governor's Office on how to develop the Coastal Bend area. Representatives from the governor's office hosted a luncheon Thursday in Port Lavaca for small business owners and city officials. Guest speaker Larry McManus with Governor Rick Perry's office, wanted Calhoun County residents to know that economic development is driven at a local level and in order for Texas to thrive, small communities like theirs must thrive first. Area business owner Gail Venecia said Port Lavaca needs to grow but doesn't have the room. Port Lavaca resident Russell Cain agreed and said they have 500 miles of coastline and real estate that needs to be developed. That's why he’s contacted the governor’s office to ask them to show area business owners what funds are available to them. Cain said the speaker informed locals of at least 6 different funding options including cash grants for business expansion or relocation to Texas. He said one fund has already proven to help bring big name companies to the Crossroads. Venecia said after learning of the funding options she has big plans for the future that will hopefully create a bright one for the Coastal Bend.
