Spring might not be here just yet but if you were thinking about starting a garden or planting your favorite fruits and vegetables now is the time. However, before digging-in, there are a couple of tips to grow by.
Betty Atkinson has been gardening for over 40 years. Atkinson said creating a garden can be overwhelming and frustrating if not done properly. So the first rule of thumb is to make sure you have the right type of soil and that it's rich. Laurie Garretson, co-owner of Earth Works, said it’s actually quite simple to create rich soil. Garretson said by giving back to the soil you are creating a solid foundation which is the most important step but if you are able to create a solid foundation you won’t have to water as much. Although spring isn't here just yet, Garretson said the temperature is perfect for gardening and if you wait till spring you might have some trouble because once the heat kicks in it's hard for plants to acclimate.
