ICE Releases Illegal Immigrants
The cuts are also forcing hundreds of illegal immigrant to be released back onto the streets. Homeland security officials said as of now the move is being done to allow them to stay within their current budget. The Crossroads is a major route for immigrants and local law enforcement is watching the battle in Washington.
Looming budget cuts in Washington, have forced immigration and customs enforcement to release hundreds of illegal immigrants from detention centers across the country. Captain Philip Dennis with the Victoria County Sheriff's Office said they've seen a big increase in the number of illegal immigrants in the area. According to ICE, released immigrants, who are considered low risk and non-criminals, would be required to check in with an officer, similar to probation. ICE said those with serious criminal histories, or pose a danger are a priority to remain in detention. Local law enforcement said anytime you have individuals crossing the borders, not knowing who they are, it is a safety concern.
Regardless of what happens with the budget cuts, county sheriffs said they still plan to keep patrolling. Goliad County Sheriff’s Office said they caught more than 150 illegal immigrants just last year. In DeWitt County sheriffs said the immigrants could be behind a recent rash of stolen cars in the last month, which immigrants have left behind.
