Green Business Program
Victoria businesses could soon be going green thanks to a new city program that's being proposed. The Green Business Program is currently in the early stages of development but once its implemented it could have a huge impact on our city's resources.
The city of Victoria is currently trying to partner up with city businesses in an effort to keep Victoria clean. Darryl Lesak, with Environmental Services further explained that as of now our ozone stands at 70 parts-per-billion, which is close to the EPA standard of 75 parts-per-billion to which every city must comply. So if businesses do their part it could help improve air quality. When it comes to water conservation, the city currently uses about 10 acre feets of water each year, which is also half of the city’s water supply. It may not seem like much but during a time of drought but it’s crucial to conserve and Lesak said the Green Business Program will help save the city's most valuable resources by signing up voluntarily to commit to conservation. Another proposed idea that is currently being discussed is businesses building green. Lesak added that this program will not only improve the quality of life for residents but it will also make the city more appealing to potential investors. Once all the details are ironed out the implantation of the program should take place by the summer. Lesak said a number of businesses have already shown interest in participating in the program. In the meantime, he also encouraged everyone to do their part by recycling, and conserving water and energy.
