Dangers of Lack of Sleep
With the increase of big rigs on the road for Eagle Ford Shale, law enforcement is increasing their numbers as well. Troopers are saturating commercial areas to make sure these 18-wheelers are following the law and not nodding off at the wheel. For certain jobs lack of sleep can pose a danger to you and other travelers on the roads. A few weeks ago, a tanker with crude oil rolled over. It didn't spill oil but DPS said the driver was sleepy and was put in the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. With the increase of big rigs, troopers are keeping an eye out through a task force. Trooper Gerald Bryant said drivers must keep records of their hours and that they can only drive 12 hours, and then they’re required by law to stay off the road for 8 hours. Trooper Bryant said commercial driving regulations are enforced and when it comes to sleep, health officials have said sleep needs vary from person to person but studies show that adults should have at least 7 to 9 hours.
