Criminals Banned from Food Stamps
Should criminals, especially violent criminals be denied government assisted programs for life or should we give them a second chance? This very idea is being debated by our Federal Government and has some folks here in the Crossroads debating the issue.
In a unanimous decision inside the senate this past Wednesday, those who commit or have committed violent crimes in the past could be banned from receiving food stamps forever. Republican Senator David Vitter from Louisiana was successful in passing an amendment. Aggravated sexual abuse, murder, and pedophilia are permanently banned from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program in the U.S. Those who commit terrible acts against others and repeat offenders is one thing but those who may have committed such a crime in the past even many years ago should they continue to be punished?
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Amendment is part of the Farm Bill. While this amendment passed, the Farm Bill as a whole is still being debated in the senate.
