Contagious Classrooms

Schools and playgrounds have become breeding grounds for the flu, a virus that's hitting Texas harder than it has in years. Victoria's school district said they've felt its effects, with a significant decline in attendance over the past weeks.

The Victoria independent school district's policy when it comes to sick students is for the child to be 24 hours fever free. Diane Boyett with VISD said classrooms are one of the most common places to spread illnesses and much of the spreading can happen before the child even knows they are ill. Boyett said while their attendance numbers did drop over the in the beginning of December due to illnesses, she said over the past two weeks, they seem to be coming back up. All Texas public schools receive state funding based on their attendance. So having kids absent can affect how much money a school gets.
