It's been a busy day for highway 185 before the fatal 18-wheeler wreck Monday afternoon, but before that Calhoun County sheriff deputies were chasing a van full of suspected illegal immigrants. The group ditched their ride as they were trying to get away from authorities.

Calhoun County Deputy Derrick Bermea was on duty when he spotted a suspicious vehicle. The pursuit lasted about five minutes when the van made for a quick escape. Officers are unsure exactly how many individuals escaped the vehicle, but as many as fourteen were reported, both men and women. Officers searched the area for several hours, but did not locate any individuals. Sheriff George Aleman said incidents involving suspected illegals seem to happen more frequently in Calhoun County. Sheriff Aleman also said the van will be taken into custody in hopes that someone would come to claim it, and they will contact border patrol to alert them of the incident. He added the case is still under investigation.
