HOUSTON (AP) — Nearly three-dozen people — 13 of them former corrections officers — are named in a federal indictment accusing them of taking bribes and participating in a scheme that supplied inmates at a South Texas prison with illegal cell phones, tobacco and drugs.
The officers were all at the McConnell Unit in Beeville, about 85 miles south of San Antonio. Also named in the indictment were at least two inmates and other former employees of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
They are among 32 people listed in the 23-page indictment.
Harlingen television station KGBT reports (http://bit.ly/15NYiEM ) the federal racketeering charges became known after several defendants began appearing Tuesday in different federal courts in South Texas.
The indictment was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Corpus Christi and unsealed Monday.
