VISD’s Need for School Bus Drivers

Victoria ISD is throwing up the red flag to get more people behind the wheel of their yellow buses. Officials said the lack of drivers is creating longer wait times for kids to picked-up and dropped off from school but what's causing the shortage?

Nicole Hickl talked to school officials to get the answers.

Unfortunately the shortage for drivers of school buses has caused some of the school field trips to be cancelled in order to make sure there is enough staff to take the students home but school officials are determined to alleviate this strain. VISD officials said they are in need of at least 7 bus drivers as well as substitute drivers but less people are applying for the job because they could make more somewhere else. Diane Boyett with VISD said they can get drivers on the school bus routes as soon as they go through all the background checks. She added it's critical for them to have the drivers in place to prepare for the next school year.
