VISD Excellence Presentation

From academics to attendance, district leaders have been searching for new and innovative ways to battle the problem of absences. Last year the district and community leaders launched a committee group aimed at turning struggling numbers around. Monday night, the groups presented an update to their progress.

Few students and empty chairs, it's a problem that is common in VISD and at the high school level, it's an even bigger issue. Getting students to come to school is something VISD is pushing to improve. Last year, the district announced their Community of Excellence group that consists of seven focus committees, who have pin-pointed seven different areas to improve attendance and academics. On Monday night the committees gave an update to the public on their progress. Some committees have created a mentor program where high school students mentor elementary children and some even host family nights for parent education. When it comes to motivating high school students, the Career Preparation Committee is one of the groups that are addressing the issue through field trips at different companies. Through the first 12 weeks of the school year, the district said they have a 96% attendance rate for all schools, but for high schools, it's much lower at around 91-92%.
