VICTORIA (KAVU) - Wal-Mart is known for rolling back on prices, but on Saturday they were rolling out the fun and entertainment at their grand opening celebration.
After opening doors on Wednesday, the new Wal-Mart super center kept the grand opening celebration going with entertainment and food on Saturday. Hundreds of shoppers from all over the Crossroads loaded up their carts at the mega retailer.
"We drove in from Edna today. I needed to go do some other errands so I decided, lets drive by there and see what they have," said Billie Rodriguez.
The event included free food, a live broadcast by Hit Radio 104.7 and autographs from a couple of the Houston Texans Cheerleaders. "It's kind of cool to have something like this for the public," said Daniel Garcia.
Officials for the mega-retailer say the Wal-Mart foundation also plans to distribute $8,000 in grants to several local non-profits. The 150,000sqft. store located off Houston Highway and Sam Houston will be open 24-hours a day. Officials say the new super center is not only convenient for surrounding areas but it also helps our local economy.
"We created 300 jobs in the area and we're working on our staffing for the holidays. That's a big plus, not only are we affecting Victoria itself but also the little surrounding areas," said Wal-Mart manager Laura Rivera.
Wal-Mart officials say they are still hiring for different positions. You may apply at the store or you can visit their website at www.walmart.com.
