Pot Bill

A new pot law could be coming to Texas. Colorado and Washington recently legalized marijuana and now those caught with the drug in the Lone Star State could also catch a break when it comes to lighting-up.

There may be softer penalties if you get caught with pot thanks to house bill 184, proposed by Representative Harold Dutton out of Houston. Texas law currently states that those caught with an ounce of marijuana could face up to a two thousand dollar fine and 180 days in jail but that might soon change.

The new bill also intends to soften the blow by eliminating jail time for those caught with an ounce or less but local law enforcement said that doesn't mean they'll be easier on those caught with the illegal drug. Police said the bill supplies them with extra time and money, allowing them to focus on bigger busts. The hearing for the new proposed law was this past Tuesday but no decisions have been made. If passed the bill would go into effect September 1st.
