Bill to Appoint School Marshals

A newly proposed Texas law is looking to train some teachers and staff, to make schools a safer place. A Dallas area lawmaker has filed a bill in Austin that would allow Texas schools to appoint weapon-carrying marshals on-campus, which is another idea, spawning from the Sandy Hook massacre.

Yolanda Navarro has three children and a niece who attend Nursery ISD. She said living in a rural community they don't have the luxury of having law enforcement close by if ever an emergency were to occur, so she likes the idea of a trained marshal at school. Nursery ISD Superintendent Suzanne Bell agreed and said they don’t currently have any armed guards on campus to protect the 106 students there, so having an assigned school marshal is definitely something the district would consider.

The bill filed by Representative Jason Villalba is called the Protection of Texas Children Act and states the school marshal would need their concealed hand gun license as well as additional weapons training. It said the marshal would not wear a uniform and that the gun would have to be locked up in a secure location. Bell said she likes that idea more than having the marshal carry the gun on them. Bell stated that these days schools must not only provide education but also protection and safety for students. The proposal would allow one school marshal for every 400 students. If passed the bill would go into effect September 1st but Villalba said if they get enough support it could go into effect immediately.
