Airports Budget Cuts

In less than a week, congress must come to an agreement to avoid major spending cuts. On the potential chopping block is the control tower at Victoria Regional Airport. Monday night, airport management is speaking out about how this will severely impact the airport, not only in business but also putting lives in danger.

An airport control tower serves as guidance for all incoming and outgoing aircraft traffic. Without it, many aircraft cannot takeoff, land, or even fly by, potentially putting lives in danger. This troubling scenario could become a reality at over 100 airports nationwide, including Victoria Regional, if Congress and the White House cannot reach a deal to avoid major government spending cuts. Without a control tower, much of the clientele of the airport would then have to find somewhere else to do business.

The United States military currently makes up 65% of the airports annual income. Without the tower, military planes are not able to take off, land or conduct training exercises.
Private aircraft also use the airport for storage, daily flights and training, with most requiring direction from the control tower. If the cuts occur and the tower closes, Jason Milewski the airport manager said the impacts would not be positive and said that his office is working with county commissioners and leaders in Washington in an effort to keep the tower operational, but with the deadline looming, the potential cuts have a good chance of being implemented, however, Milewski remains optimistic. Milewski added that even if the control tower closes, it will not affect in any way the four daily commercial flights by Sun Air to and from Houston.
