The Head Baseball Coach at Victoria West High School has challenged his players all school year, helping them battle through wins, and even the tragic loss of a fellow teammate. Newscenter 25 introduces us to Manuel Alvarado, our Educator of the Week.

Head Baseball Coach, Manuel Alvarado, led the West H.S. Baseball Team to a District Title Tuesday night with a win over Victoria East H.S. resulting in the Warriors remaining undefeated in District.

Head Coach of the Warrior’s Baseball Team, and out Educator of the Week, Manuel Alvarado, commented, “It's one of our goals since we started; we just want to continue on through District, try to go undefeated.”

“It feels real good to be on top, because every time you play everybody's after you, they want to beat you and they're striving to be on top, but we're always the one on top,” said Warriors Junior, A.J. Kuester.

Players say they are aiming to make it past the2nd round of Playoffs this school year and Coach Alvarado is pushing them to get there.

“He yells at me, but it works. He yells at everybody, but at the end of the day he loves you,” explained Kuester.

“If you mess up he'll let you know, but whenever you do well he lets you know that too,” commented West H.S. Senior Miles Manning.

Coach Alvarado says he enjoys teaching these boys the fundamentals of the game, saying, “I think that's a very important part of Coaching, interacting with kids, getting to be their role model, getting to see them every day, watch them come up from 9th grade to their senior year and just seeing how far they've come and developed and come in as young men and leaving here as older gentlemen.”

It hasn't been an easy path for the Warriors suffering the loss of team mate, Austin Davis, just a week before clinching the District Title.

Coach Alvarado has stepped in to give the players the support they need both on and off the field, commenting that, “It has brought us closer together as a team. The kids are playing with a lot more focus. We had a rough week, last week, but we made it through it and we're going to keep on trying, to keep making it, and keeping our heads up, and keep on playing.”

Coach Alvarado says he and the players are taking it one day at a time, and one game at a time, in their quest for a State Title.
