Whether it's lending a listening ear or giving advice on friendships, Paula Schroeder is helping students at Smith Elementary succeed.
Ms. Schroeder works with all of the students through individual counseling, guidance lessons in the classroom, or one of the many student activities at the school. Her door is always open. "In the classroom you do a lot of academics, but on this end i do a lot of the social development and emotional. So, it's reaching them at a whole different level than you do in the classroom, " said Ms. Schroeder.
The students say she always gives them time to talk about problems at home, problems with friends, bullies, or to share any concern or good news they would like. "Ms Sschroeder is nice. you can talk to her about a lot of stuff, you can trust her with everything you say, " said 5th Grader Olivia Saenz. Fifth Grader Kaylah Houston said, "It feels good because you don't always have a counselor like her. She's unique and one of a kind." Third Grader Leaunna Dean said, "Ms. Schroeder is trustworthy, she's loyal and when problems are coming, she can probably tell when it's going to happen."
"I can't go back and fix 10 years worth of things that are going on, but just to get them on track for the day and to make that day the best day they can make it... and just try to get their day back on track, " said Ms. Schroeder about her role at the school.
For caring about each individual child's personal, and in turn school, success, Ms. Schroeder has been named our Educator of the Week.
